It's no surprise that we both developed asthma. Tailpipe emissions -- like the ones from our school bus -- are a leading source of nitrogen oxides and other pollutants that can lead to lung and heart disease.

My sister often had to miss school and was hospitalized routinely for asthma. I'll never forget visiting her at the hospital when we were kids, seeing oxygen tubes in her nose and a machine helping her stay alive.
