A round-up of news and ways to take action from this July.
Dear John
Even if you enjoyed last week’s heatwave, those were scary temperatures.
Our latest legal victory couldn’t have come at a more important time. I’ve got more on that below in case you missed the amazing news. But if you have a few spare minutes, could you answer some questions first?
The announcement of the next energy price rise is coming soon. So even though there might be more scorchers to come, we need your help preparing for the colder months ahead.
Here’s the first question:
Does your home already have enough insulation to help keep your bills down this winter?

WHO'S MOST AFFECTED BY EXTREME HEAT?
[link removed]
Last week's record-breaking temperatures left most of us feeling a bit uncomfortable. But some of us will be hit harder by extreme heat than others as the climate crisis worsens.
Our latest research identifies the neighbourhoods across England set to be worst affected. Communities with high numbers of older people or children are amongst those most at risk from the health impacts of soaring temperatures, as are those without access to green space.
Read our analysis to find out which are the 5 local authority areas with most at risk neighbourhoods. And read on below to find out why we need national leaders who take our climate goals seriously. And UK government climate policies that do their job.

WE TOOK THE UK GOVERNMENT TO COURT – AND WON
[link removed]
Last week we celebrated an incredible win on a key court case against the UK government over one of its flawed climate policies. In a landmark victory, a judge ruled that the Net Zero Strategy is unlawful [1].
Now the government’s got to revise its strategy and lay out a credible plan for meeting emissions targets by 31 March 2023. It’s huge news.
Our case is part of a growing wave of history-making climate litigation – challenging polluting companies and governments dodging their responsibilities to the planet. Read on to find out more about our case and why we’re determined to fix the Net Zero Strategy.

WILL THE NEXT PRIME MINISTER BE GOOD FOR THE PLANET?
[link removed]
With the UK facing scary temperatures and soaring energy bills, we need urgent and meaningful intervention from our next prime minister. The current government has a patchy record on climate. As Boris Johnson steps down this September, what can we expect next?
Friends of the Earth’s Political Affairs Manager Adam Barnett weighs up the climate credentials of the 2 candidates vying to replace him – Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Read on for predictions on what to expect from each of our potential future leaders.

IS IT TIME TO RETHINK ECONOMICS?
“When a country can be sued by a foreign corporation in a secret trade tribunal for protecting the environment – fundamental change is needed.” – Sam Cossar, Friends of the Earth International
An example of this topsy-turvy system comes from Slovenia. Where national laws meant that UK-based Ascent Resources needed an environmental impact assessment before it could start commercially fracking. Ascent didn't want to do one. Its fracking plans were put on hold. And now Ascent is suing Slovenia for a reported 120 million euros in lost earnings.
Our friends at Friends of the Earth International do lots of campaigning to push for a new, fairer economy – one that doesn’t prioritise private industry’s profits over people. So if you’d like to learn more head over to their website ([link removed]) . Or follow them on Twitter.
