Terrible Trump History | Putin Edition

Periodically, the researchers at Never Again PAC will be sending reminders of how close our democracy came to failing. We call this series "This Day in Terrible Trump History," and each one will highlight an event we should never forget and never allow to happen again. Today, we wanted to take a look at not just one day of Trump-induced shame but at the early days of his relationship with international war criminal Vladimir Putin.

July 31, 2015

The writing was on the wall; as he launched his presidential campaign, Donald Trump was adamant he and Putin would become peas in a pod.

Donald Trump: “I think I’d get along very well with Vladimir Putin. I just think so.”

December 18, 2015

From early on, Donald Trump was defending Vladimir Putin's gross abuse of human rights. Later on in 2015, he would defend Putin's murder of journalists.

February 17, 2016

Putin would go on to fervently praise Trump, even calling him a genius. Despite calls from the international community to disavow this statement, Donald would bask in the flattery and even reaffirm his admiration for Putin.

Donald Trump: "He said Donald Trump is a genius and he is going to be the leader of the party and he’s going to be the leader of the world or something.

‘We want you to disavow that statement.’ I said what, he called me a genius. I’m going to disavow it? Are you crazy? Can you believe it? How stupid are they.

I think I’d have a good relationship with Putin."

Finally…

July 28, 2016

Despite signaling the complete opposite, at a rally on July 28, 2016, Trump promised that he would be firm with Putin. In the same event, he would also refuse to call on Putin to stay out of the election and refuse to "get tough on Putin."

Over the next four years, our country would witness countless instances when our commander in chief would choose to align himself with the Kremlin and allow a dictator to do his authoritarian bidding openly. The effects of Trump's refusal to protect his country and hold a dictator accountable would lead to a ripple effect that ultimately led to one of the deadliest conflicts seen in modern history when Russia under the leadership of Putin invaded Ukraine.

The impact of a bad leader reverberates years and even generations after their time in office has passed. The administration of Donald Trump has already done massive damage to our country. It's up to us to make sure the Treason Caucus can't continue this tradition of treason and shame.

Help us unseat them.
