From April to June this year -- a span of just three months -- members of the House
collectively raised more than $200 million for their re-election campaigns. This raises
the question: “How are members able to raise that much money and do their jobs?”

Here's the dirty truth: When the House is in session, members - both Republicans and Democrats - spend thousands of hours courting donors on the taxpayer's dime. Time that should be spent drafting legislation, attending committee meetings, and voting is spent dialing for dollars. It's gross.

That's why my Republican colleague Rep. Mike Gallagher (WI-08) and I recently introduced
the On the Clock Act, which would prohibit direct fundraising by members of Congress

Soliciting money from big out-of-state donors and special interests undermines the
integrity of the job.
