MONTANA DEADLINE TO COMMENT 5 PM MST, JULY 21 THE COMMISSION WILL MEET AUGUST 25 BUT COMMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 21. CLICK TO COMMENT, (Scroll down for Trapping and wolf seasons) MONTANA FISH, WILDLIFE AND PARKS COMMISSION Last year 21 Yellowstone wolves were killed. National Park. Montana FWP seeks to combine 2 wolf management units (WMU) 313 and 316 along Yellowstone's border with a quota of 10. TALKING POINTS (Try to use your own words as best you can) The source of data for counting wolves comes exclusively from the hunting community not the scientific community or even trained surveyors. There is no biological or scientific need for a wolf hunting/trapping season. There is strong public support for wolves. A poll by Remington Research found that 76% of Americans oppose trophy hunting Wolf conflicts are extremely low and processes are in place to address these rare occurrences. While zero quota is preferred, Re-establish the quota of 1 wolf in WMUs 313, 316 and 110. Do not take away WMU 110 that borders Glacier National Park. This is a vital wildlife corridor into the U. S. Keeping the the WMU's will maintain the consistency in reporting and tracking over the years, coordinate with elk management units, and increase transparency. Reinstate the prohibition of spotting and shooting of wolves from aircraft and eliminate baiting, night hunting and the use of infrared, thermal, night vision scopes. Thank you to Trap Free Montana and Wolves of the Rockies for their insight. ____________________________________________________ COLORADO Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Gray Wolf Restoration and Management is accepting comments regarding the planning process to restore wolves to Colorado. The comments will be made submitted to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission. CLICK TO SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS TALKING POINTS Wolf recovery in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana has not had a negative impact on elk populations in these states You fully support and encourage non-lethal measures to address conflicts Based on license sales, only 5.2% of residents hunt and it is anticipated that even less would be interested in hunting wolves. In the Western US a minority approve of hunting for sport. Nationwide, a recent poll by Remington found that 76% of Americans oppose trophy hunting. There is no biological or scientific need to hunt wolves. The wolf restoration plan must be based on science and objectivity using facts, not hearsay, myths and embellished tales. Thank you to Western Watersheds for their leadership ______________________________________________________________ REMINDER MINI-GRANTS TO BE AWARDED We are proud to announce that for the fourth year, we will be awarding mini-grants for wolf education and/or the promotion of non-lethal measures to minimize wolf conflicts.
