John,

Last week we talked about our fight for democracy and voting rights. Today, we’d like to talk about social and economic justice.

Policing in America, at its core, is deeply rooted in structural and systemic racism.

Alliance for Police Accountability states: “We don’t need a system that specifically, and by design, oppresses the poor and people of color, but instead one that embodies restorative practices and diversion to social services; one that approaches violence, mental health and addiction as the public health issues they are.”

John, engaging and empowering BIPOC communities to vote and be heard in government is crucial to holding our politicians and the justice system accountable. Will you donate $10 today to help fund our work in these communities?

As for economic justice, Pennsylvania has not raised its minimum wage for more than 10 years, where it has sat at the federal level of $7.25/hour. Nearly half the country, and every state neighboring PA, has increased the minimum wage with several on the path to $15/hour in the near future.

Even worse is the subminimum wage paid to tipped workers. The subminimum wage is a direct legacy of slavery and we can see that the two-tiered wage system continues to be a source of economic instability and racial inequity for millions of workers, a majority of whom are women and disproportionately women of color.

John, empowering communities of color, immigrant communities and the youth to make their voices heard and participate in the democratic process and vote their values is critical to create the change we all want to see in Pennsylvania. Will you chip in $10 right now to help us register and mobilize these constituencies to vote in every election, twice a year?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in under-represented communities of color and immigrant communities. We will register them to vote, provide education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize people to vote in every election.
