Because of a British law, America was not allowed to print Bibles in the English language--they had to be imported from England. But that changed when America finally became independent from Britain. So In January 1781 [link removed], Robert Aitken (the official printer for the Continentla Congress) petitioned Congress for permission to print an English-language Bible on his presses in America. Congress appointed a committee, comprised of Founding Fathers James Duane, Thomas McKean, and John Witherspoon, to review his Bible. In September 1782, the committee (and the two congressional chaplains) reported back to Congress their full approval of this work. Congress then issued a ringing endorsement which was printed in the front of that Bible (which became known as [link removed] the "Aitken Bible" or "the Bible of the Revolution").
