- Tucker Carlson ([link removed]) , expertly diagnosing the cause of mass shootings

If the House January 6 Committee was hoping for a Fourth of July weekend filled with rest and relaxation, well, better luck next year. After former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s explosive testimony last Tuesday, many of the blurrier aspects of the Trump administration’s criminal misdeeds have begun to come into focus.

* As a direct result of Hutchinson’s testimony, former White House Counsel Pat Cippolone will give a sworn, taped deposition ([link removed]) to the committee tomorrow behind closed doors. Members of the committee say they want Cippolone to share information about a number of issues, namely: Trump’s efforts to subvert the election, including submitting fake electoral ballots, attempting to replace the Justice Department leadership, and directly interfering with Congressional activities on January 6. Wow, what Trump lacked in productivity as president he certainly made up for in quite a lengthy to-do list for trying to overthrow democracy.

* In another development, Vice Chair Liz Cheney said that the committee is considering recommending criminal charges ([link removed]) (including, perhaps, witness tampering ([link removed]) ?) against Trump and associates to the Justice Department. Clearly nothing is set in stone (Chairman Bennie Thompson, an ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has tried to smother the idea of referring Trump’s crimes to DOJ). But Trump being charged with federal crimes would be a rare perfect combination of “justice served” and “one of the funniest events of the year.”

* Yesterday, counsel for the Oath Keepers announced that defendants from the group are choosing to waive their right to a speedy trial ([link removed]) , in an attempt to delay their day in court. Members of the group face the highest-level criminal conspiracy charges stemming from the January 6 insurrection: accused of organizing plans, raising money, and stocking firearms ahead of the U.S. Capitol attack. Good luck delaying that trial, fellas! Steve Bannon already tried that ([link removed]) .

Other key members of the former Trump Administration’s Orbit of Destruction have not fared well this week, either.
* Starting today, the Trump Organization’s longtime appraisers, Cushman & Wakefield, are facing fines of $10,000 per day for failure to comply with subpoenas ([link removed]) from the New York State Attorney General’s office. Hold on, you’re telling me that a commercial real estate corporation isn’t on the up and up? The firm worked for the Trump Organization for years before resigning after the January 6 attack, and its appraisals are central to the civil investigation into the Trump Organization's fraudulent financial practices.

* Not wanting to miss out on the fun, a special grand jury in Fulton County, GA, has subpoenaed hardcore Trump loyalists ([link removed]) like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), former Mayor of New York City and current waking nightmare sex pest Rudy Giuliani, and six other witnesses to Trump’s attempts to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia as part of their ongoing criminal investigation. Graham has announced that he plans to fight the subpoena ([link removed]) (a well-worn tactic in Trump world at this point) but the most revealing member of this island of misfit fascists may well be Giuliani, who was the only member of Trump’s legal team in Georgia who had a relationship with him prior to Election Day, and is, as we know, something of a [DEL: nutjob :DEL] political loose cannon.

At the end of its investigation, the special grand jury will, like the January 6 committee, make criminal recommendations to prosecutors if appropriate, and those prosecutors would then be tasked with deciding whether to pursue charges. Neither of these probes are shaping up to look anything short of damning for the former president, but whether Teflon Don will face any real consequences is up to prosecutors, who have never failed to disappoint us.

In another all-too-common American experience, the Fourth of July this year was marked by not one but two mass shootings. One in which a gunman in Philadelphia opened fire at the onset of the fireworks over the Philadelphia Art Museum ([link removed]) , resulting in two police officers suffering gunshot wounds. The other, much deadlier incident, occurred in Highland Park, IL, ([link removed]) when Robert “Bobby” E. Crimo III, fired from a rooftop into the crowd of the local Fourth of July parade, killing seven people and wounding almost 40. Crimo used a semi-automatic rifle to fire three 30-round magazines down on parade goers. Among the victims were Kevin and Irina McCarthy, who were attending the festivities with their two-year-old son, who survived because his father shielded him from gunfire. Although initially authorities and news outlets alike
denied any racial or religious motivation for the killings, new information in this unfolding story points firmly in that direction. Highland Park is a largely Jewish suburb of Chicago where the shooter did not reside, and as video shows ([link removed]) , the shooting began when a traditional Jewish klezmer band started to play. Highland Park suffered other antisemitic attacks earlier this year ([link removed]) . Members of an area security team for the Chabad Synagogue in Highland Park told the Chicago Sun Times ([link removed]) that a man who matches Crimo’s description had tried to enter the synagogue at Passover, but was turned away after rousing suspicion.

Well, mates, it looks like Prime Minister Boris Johnson has gotten himself into a bit of a sticky wicket and now has to say, “Toodle pip!” (I’m so sorry). After dozens of cabinet members resigned from his government yesterday, ole’ BoJo himself announced in front of 10 Downing Street today that he would be stepping down as leader of the Conservative Party, and as Prime Minister ([link removed]) once his replacement is selected. Johnson’s tenure has been marked by scandal, particularly as it relates to corruption and his administration’s handling of the pandemic. Although there has been unrest in his orbit for some time now, the floodgates of resignation were opened when Johnson appointed Conservative M.P. Chris Pincher to his government despite being aware of previous sexual misconduct allegations against him. Pincher resigned last week after new allegations were leveled against him. It’s really an incredible sequence of
events considering the margin by which Johnson was elected in 2019. Citing this “electoral mandate,” Johnson had planned to stay on in a custodial capacity until October, but as more and more members of his party turned their backs, he claimed his choice was unavoidable, saying, “The herd instinct is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves.” Don’t fret now, Boris, we’ll always remember you like this ([link removed]) .
