Announcing another litigation win for public charge.
** Public Charge Updates and Subgrantee Announcement
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Allies,
We’re excited to share a few updates with you this week. First up, another public charge victory in the courts; second, a celebration of our 2022-23 subgrantees; and third, a few more opportunities to connect with PIF leaders via a virtual meet & greet. Keep reading to learn more.
** Public Charge Legal Updates
------------------------------------------------------------
We at PIF are happy to announce another litigation win for public charge. On Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (which sits in Chicago) rejected a bid by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to intervene in litigation that ended in 2020, with an order striking down the Trump public charge policy. This is the second courtroom victory for immigrant families this month. On June 15, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a similar petition by Arizona’s attorney general, who sought to intervene in a California case. PIF partners were actively involved in both lawsuits, and we applaud their leadership and thank them for their vigorous defense of immigrant families.
These decisions leave public charge policy unchanged. The 1999 Immigration and Naturalization Service guidance remains in effect, as it has been since March 2021, when the Biden Administration ended the Trump public charge policy. The Biden DHS announced its intent to finalize new public charge regulations as early as July.
** Congratulations to PIF's 2022-2023 Subgrantees!
------------------------------------------------------------
As part of our commitment to supporting organizations across the nation who work to expand immigrant access to public benefits, PIF is proud to announce that we have awarded funding to an incredible cohort of organizations from across the country through this year's round of subgranting. Thirty groups received grant funds: 10 coalitions and 20 individual organizations. Approximately half of grantees are receiving funds for the first time from PIF. We are so excited to see what the coming year brings in terms of outreach, education, advocacy, and learning. Congratulations, subgrantees! We anticipate offering a new round of funding in early 2023 and look forward to collaborating with our network and our funders to build the capacity of immigrant-serving organizations and support their work.
