Watching the stream of news about the January 6th Commission Hearings, one thing has become crystal clear: the violence of that day might be over, but the attack on our democracy is still happening.   

What can we do?

We need to shore up protections for our elections now. That means making sure each state has all the tools they need to beat back the extremists who want to dismantle our democracy brick by brick. 

And we’re starting with pro-democracy ballot initiatives like Promote the Vote 2022 in the great state of Michigan. Passing the Promote the Vote 2022 ballot initiative will protect the security of Michigan’s elections by ensuring radical, anti-voter measures that would make it possible to circumvent the will of the voters are never implemented. Promote the Vote 2022 will also make voting more accessible for everyone. 

No matter what state you live in, what happens in Michigan this November will have lasting consequences for the freedom to vote and our democracy nationwide.

In 2020, Donald Trump and Michigan Republicans tried to deny Joe Biden’s victory in the state and send a false slate of electors.

Since then, Republican state officials have been plotting a way to undermine the will of voters. Their latest ploy is to use a little-known process in the state constitution to bypass the governor’s veto authority and pass legislation to keep people from voting, while also making it easier to overturn future election results.

The Promote the Vote 2022 ballot initiative offers common sense solutions to make voting more convenient and secure for voters in every Michigan community, especially working people, members of our military, elderly voters, voters with disabilities, and rural voters who live far from the polls.

Whether Promote the Vote 2022 passes in Michigan this November—as well as similar measures in states across the country—will have lasting consequences for our democracy in 2024 and beyond.
