CW: This email mentions assault.

Arveen’s story is hard to hear, but I promise you it has an uplifting ending.

A trans woman from Afghanistan, Arveen was forced to hide her gender identity from her family. When she was sexually assaulted and contracted HIV, she hid that from them, too.

After seeing a social media post related to her gender identity, Arveen’s father broke a glass and attacked her with it. She was hospitalized, now in danger in Turkey, where her family relocated.

Completely in secret, our attorneys helped her complete an application for asylum in Canada—where the U.S. was referring Afghan refugees.

Just one month ago, her Canadian asylum application was approved! After many years of living in danger in Afghanistan and Turkey, Arveen is safe in Canada. I spoke with her recently, and she filed this video message to share with you.
