CW: This email mentions assault.
Arveen’s story is hard to hear, but I promise you it has an uplifting ending.
A trans woman from Afghanistan, Arveen was forced to hide her gender identity from her family. When she was sexually assaulted and contracted HIV, she hid that from them, too.
After seeing a social media post related to her gender identity, Arveen’s father broke a glass and attacked her with it. She was hospitalized, now in danger in Turkey, where her family relocated.
Completely in secret, our attorneys helped her complete an application for asylum in Canada—where the U.S. was referring Afghan refugees.
Just one month ago, her Canadian asylum application was approved! After many years of living in danger in Afghanistan and Turkey, Arveen is safe in Canada. I spoke with her recently, and she filmed this video message to share with you.

In the future, Arveen wants to study and improve her English, and become a social worker so she can help others the way our attorneys helped her.
Her hope is that Immigration Equality keeps growing and growing—and you can help. By becoming a Visionary, a partner in our new monthly giving program, you make it possible to react quickly to crises facing LGBTQ refugees like Arveen.
For the equivalent of one cup of coffee or take-out meal each month, you will join a community of supporters who invest in the long-term success of Immigration Equality.
As a Visionary, a monthly giver, your dollar will go further and your impact will be greater.
Thank you for your support,
