News from CPAG

GENERAL ELECTION 2019
This election period, we want all candidates from all parties to make a
commitment to tackle child poverty. If child poverty is important to you, it
should be important to your candidates too. You can help put pressure on
candidates, and the next government, to take action on child poverty by writing
to them now.

A Supreme Court judgment last month confirmed that tribunals and other public
bodies must disapply regulations in situations where applying them would lead to
a breach of human rights.

This case arose initially from a challenge to the 'bedroom tax' being applied in
certain situations. Our Head of Strategic Litigation Carla Clarke said the
ruling was “extremely welcome" and that the Court "has made clear that the
obligation on public authorities not to act in a way which is incompatible with
a person’s human rights means exactly what it says." The case was brought by solicitors Leigh Day. We intervened alongside Public
Law Project, Liberty and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

SECURE FUTURES NEWS
Our Secure Futures project is progressing at pace, examining the question What does a social security system that provides a secure future for children
and families look like?

We have had some fascinating recent contributions to the debate:

* Jane Millar, Professor of Social Policy and David Young, Doctoral Candidate
at the University of Bath, examine income security for families with children

* Alison Garnham, CEO of CPAG, looks at the problem with means-testing

* Aoife Nolan, Professor of International Human Rights Law at the University of
Nottingham, makes the case for putting children's rights at the heart of social security

* And Ruth Lister, member of the House of Lords and Emeritus Professor of
Social Policy at Loughborough University, writes on seeking security in an increasingly insecure world

This year we’ve teamed up with artist Sam Murray-Sutton to create two beautiful
water colour designs. 100% of profits from our Christmas cards go towards
funding our work to end child poverty in the UK.

A pack of 10 is £4.99 or £4.15 for CPAG members.
