General election 2019

This election period, we want all candidates from all parties to make a commitment to tackle child poverty. If child poverty is important to you, it should be important to your candidates too. You can help put pressure on candidates, and the next government, to take action on child poverty by writing to them now.

Supreme Court victory 

A Supreme Court judgment last month confirmed that tribunals and other public bodies must disapply regulations in situations where applying them would lead to a breach of human rights.

This case arose initially from a challenge to the 'bedroom tax' being applied in certain situations. Our Head of Strategic Litigation Carla Clarke said the ruling was “extremely welcome" and that the Court "has made clear that the obligation on public authorities not to act in a way which is incompatible with a person’s human rights means exactly what it says." The case was brought by solicitors Leigh Day. We intervened alongside Public Law Project, Liberty and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
