Summer Programming Flag Day Tuesday, June 14 Celebrate the adoption of the flag of the United States with online resources from the National Constitution Center. Live Virtual Programs: Virtual American Flag History and Etiquette Workshop 12 p.m. ET Tune in for this special show, led by the National Constitution Center’s education team, and discover the history and symbolism of the American flag and learn all about the proper way to display it. Post a photo of the American flag, a fun fact related to the flag, or a reflection of what the country’s stars and stripes mean to you on social media. In-Person Events in Historic Philadelphia: From star-spangled banners to five-star generals, Philadelphia’s historic district celebrates the shared birthday of two of our country’s greatest institutions—the American flag and the U.S. Army. Events across Old City Philadelphia include flag raising ceremonies, a patriotic parade, and more. Most events will be outdoors and free to the public; no reservations are required. Juneteenth Sunday, June 19 Visitors can commemorate the end of slavery in America with special tours of the Center’s exhibit, Civil War and Reconstruction: The Battle for Freedom and Equality, the first exhibit in America devoted to exploring how constitutional clashes over slavery set the stage for the Civil War, and how the nation transformed the Constitution after the war to more fully embrace the Declaration of Independence’s promise of liberty and equality. Additional programs highlight figures from the Reconstruction era like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and more. The program is FREE for all students in the Philadelphia area, which includes transportation to and from the Center.
