Dear John,

Today is 100 days since the war in Ukraine started.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion, one-third of Ukrainians have been forced from their homes.

This is the largest human displacement crisis in the world today

Some 8 million people have been displaced internally within Ukraine and some 13 million people are estimated to be stranded in affected areas or unable to leave due to heightened security risks, destruction of bridges and roads, as well as lack of resources or information on where to find safety and accommodation.

I wanted to share with you this message from my colleague Marta, who left Ukraine in February and is now working as a UNHCR translator in Poland. She is just one of the many Ukrainians working with UNHCR across the region, providing urgently needed help which is possible thanks to your support([link removed]). I also want to say thanks to Marta for sharing her story and for working with us in this unprecedented crisis.

Best,
Astrid van Genderen Stort,
Chief of Emergencies and External Engagement, UNHCR
PS: The numbers of people forced to flee are growing every day and we need urgent funds to increase our support. Will you please donate monthly today?([link removed])

Hello and nice to meet you.

My name is Marta, and I am an interpreter with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

Привіт і приємно познайомитися.

Мене звати Марта, я перекладач для УВКБ ООН, Агентства ООН у справах біженців

I arrived in Poland from Ukraine in February, where I met some UNHCR staff, after I got settled, I applied for a job as an interpreter and then started working with UNHCR in May.

Each day in my job I speak with fellow Ukrainians about their experience in the war and how it felt to flee their home. It can be emotionally very difficult hearing their stories - but I am very happy that I can use my psychology and language skills to help them.

Even though every conversation is unique, there is one common thread - every person I speak to hopes for the war to end and that they can return home soon. We all hope for this.

It is very difficult to be away from home, but it has been very heartening to see the huge amount of support that Ukrainians have received from all around the world. Please keep doing what you are doing to support people from Ukraine and other refugees around the world.

Best wishes,
Marta
Translator, UNHCR Poland
