Friend, this Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to celebrate, connect, and share stories—my personal favorite. This is especially needed right now, against a backdrop of racially-charged hate crimes in the US—from Buffalo to Laguna Woods.

Reflecting on our own stories and sharing them with others is a beautiful way to celebrate the singular power each of us brings to this movement. Our goals are aligned, but our stories are very different—and that is our greatest asset. After all, taking on the enormous challenge of industrial animal agriculture isn’t something we can do alone. That’s why every day, and especially this month of May, we celebrate the many stories of the AAPI community, at THL and far beyond. Together, we’re building an inclusive, resilient, intersectional way forward; one where every story is heard and appreciated. And together, we’re writing a new story for the animals.

It’s all over the news right now: Ventilation Shutdown Plus (VSD+) is the horrific slaughter method that has roasted millions of live hens amidst the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Will you tell the USDA to condemn the cruel practice of live-roasting chickens?

Correction: On May 4, we sent an email stating that recent USDA slaughterhouse inspector reports were released for the first time ever under the Freedom of Information Act. Rather, the USDA proactively and publicly released the reports as part of a settlement to a lawsuit brought by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and Farm Sanctuary alleging the USDA’s failure to meet its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act [[link removed]]. This was not the first time that such records had been made public; this was the first time the specific records cited in our report had been proactively disclosed.

The contents of these inspector reports are damning: They detail live birds being thrown, crushed, suffocated, and boiled alive in facilities across the country.

Learn more about AWI’s long-standing work to bring USDA reports to light [[link removed]], and take action right now to hold the corporations profiting from this cruelty accountable [[link removed]]. We remain grateful for the extraordinary advocacy that fast tracked the release of these USDA reports to the public domain—without which this corporate campaign initiative would not be possible.

From all your friends at The Humane League, thank you for all you do to make a difference for animals!
