My parents brought a number of foster children and foreign students into our family when I was growing up.

The racial and ethnic diversity we enjoyed in that mostly white suburb was exciting. When it came to helping create a multi-ethnic society, I actually thought our household was ahead of the game.

Little did I know at the time how elusive that societal goal would be and how much work it would take to build a world where everybody can enjoy true security and dignity.
