My parents brought a number of foster children and foreign students into our family when I was growing up.

The racial and ethnic diversity we enjoyed in that mostly white suburb was exciting. When it came to helping create a multi-ethnic society, I actually thought our household was ahead of the game.

Little did I know at the time how elusive that societal goal would be and how much work it would take to build a world where everybody can enjoy true security and dignity.
At the Christian Century, we’re not interested in merely rearranging our own or our readers’ prejudices, or becoming what a friend of mine calls “polite pluralists.”

We’re determined to help scrub off some of the assumptions that keep us all from being the responsible citizens and moral creatures we’re supposed to be.
