A casual observer of government messaging might assume the pandemic is over and we can wash our hands of it (or stop washing them). But actual deaths, iPhone salesmen, and poop tell a different story.
* Cases are rising again ([link removed]) , up 57 percent from two weeks ago. The U.S. passed the one-million deaths benchmark ([link removed]) on May 17. That’s the population of the nation’s 10th largest city. It’s more than the number of people who have died from AIDS in the U.S. over the last 30 years, and more than died from the 1918-1919 flu pandemic. Thanks to coronavirus, the U.S. has experienced the biggest drop in life expectancy ([link removed]) since World War II.

* According to Boston wastewater tracking, the latest, even more transmissible Omicron variant, BA.2.12.1, exploded across Massachusetts ([link removed]) in recent weeks and is outpacing its predecessor, BA.2, in other regions, as well.

* Also, famous people are getting it again. And then again. Vocally unvaccinated Australian politician Pauline Hanson ([link removed]) , who is standing for re-election as a Queensland senator on Saturday, has tested positive for COVID-19 ([link removed]) days out from the federal election. (“I will survive,” she memed ([link removed]) , “to some people’s disgust.”) Jimmy Kimmel ([link removed]) has it again, for the second time in a month.

Nevertheless the policy response looks kinda like what you’d expect if Omicron never mutated into existence.
* The CDC now recommends Pfizer boosters ([link removed]) for kids age 5 to 11, but there are still no vaccines for kids under 5. Which you would think would mean masks stay on in schools, but New York mayor Eric Adams said nay, nixing a mask mandate ([link removed]) as kids return to school with a heightened COVID-19 alert. Apple, by contrast, has reinstated its mask mandate ([link removed]) for employees at 100 stores. The children are our future, or at least, our future purchasers of phones.

* The best news would be if we could all look forward to Omicron-specific vaccines this fall. Scientists and federal health officials are circling a strategy that may pair hot new COVID-19 vaccines finely, tuned to the latest variant, with the traditional flu shot in a kind of shot cocktail ([link removed]) . But some of their peers are playing multidimensional chess, cautioning against creating “an impression that we don’t have a very effective vaccination program.” Sound familiar?

The political decision to drop all COVID-19 mitigation has made it almost impossible to reinstate any measures; new CDC warnings fall on deaf ears ([link removed]) or no ears at all, including in the White House. The least they can do is get their stuff together by the end of June, when scientific advisers to the Food and Drug Administration will meet to identify the coronavirus variant most likely to be proliferating in the United States as temperatures cool off in the fall, and hopefully give manufacturers time to decide whether the vaccines’ composition needs to be updated and to ramp up production, hopefully enough to churn out hundreds of millions of doses ([link removed]) before Halloween.

The 2020 Census was off—like, very off ([link removed]) —in 14 states, but those numbers will be used to allocate political representation and federal funding for the rest of the decade anyway. A follow-up survey found that six states (Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas) had been undercounted, and eight states (Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Utah) had been overcounted. There are no demographic details of the populations that were undercounted, but Census experts have long worried ([link removed]'s,funding%20over%20the%20next%20decade.) that low-income and minority populations are the most likely to be missed, especially Hispanic Americans after the Trump administration attempted to add a citizenship question to the
survey.

Unfortunately the faulty 2020 numbers have already been used to divvy up seats in the House of Representatives, as well as votes in the Electoral College, and help determine how much money from hundreds of federal programs gets to the states, making correct counts crucial for states that depend on money for everything from school systems to wildfire preparations. To try to mitigate the effects of the miscounts, the bureau has set up an internal team that plans to research how to factor the follow-up survey's results into the bureau's population estimates ([link removed]) , which help guide the distribution of about $1.5 trillion a year in federal money to local communities.
* The Senate voted to pass an additional $40 billion ([link removed]) in new aid for Ukraine, after Biden called on Congress last month to deliver the additional funding, to help counter Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion over the long term.

* The House of Representatives voted 222-203 on Wednesday to pass legislation aimed at preventing domestic terrorism ([link removed]) and combating the threat of violent extremism by white supremacists. Almost every single Republican voted against the bill.

* The House January 6 committee has evidence that Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) led a Capitol tour on January 5, 2021, ([link removed]) an allegation Republicans had angrily (but dishonestly denied). Committeemembers also expect to depose former Attorney General Bill Barr in the coming days ([link removed]) .

* There are few good options ([link removed]) to get Ukrainian grain to global markets.

* In his first statement since losing the North Carolina GOP primary, soon-to-be-former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) posted a rather demented screed ([link removed]) to Instagram promising a “Dark MAGA” comeback.

* President Biden could meet with Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman for the first time as soon as next month ([link removed]) , a dramatic turnaround for a man who once declared Saudi Arabia a "pariah" with "no redeeming social value."

* Meanwhile, North Korea is preparing to conduct a nuclear test or a long-range ballistic missile test ([link removed]) around the time of Biden’s trip to the region this week.

* In 2014, Tucker Carlson and his wife were looking to get their son a leg up on his application to Georgetown University ([link removed]) when they turned to a certain Georgetown graduate who happened to be the son of a certain Vice President. In emails to Hunter Biden, Carlson and his wife Susie advocated for their son Buckley, who “loves Washington for all the right reasons,” “really wants to go to school here,” and who was also a damn fine squash player and fly fisherman.

* The Bing search engine has made it harder in North America to look up people who are politically sensitive in China ([link removed]) , according to a cybersecurity and surveillance group

* Gerhard Schroeder's publicly funded office is to be closed ([link removed]) and its remaining staff reallocated amid increasing frustration at the former German chancellor's refusal to distance himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

* Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has refused to reveal, as required by law, the addresses of properties he owns ([link removed]) in Austin and College Station to the Texas Ethics Commission. He claims the state police requested he withhold the addresses for security reasons, while the police say they have no record of making that request. Just makes you wonder what he’s building in there.

* Ireland is offering Ukrainian refugees fleeing war shelter in a 15th-century castle ([link removed]) .

* Kim Jong Un has begun using a coronavirus surge in North Korea as a p.r. opportunity ([link removed]) to air state-media footage showing him making late night visits to pharmacies. Eric Adams u up?

* California may be giving factory-farm gas systems at dairy farms twice as much climate credit ([link removed]) as they deserve.
