Welcome to the PPMW Insider!

We know that you share in our devastation at the news of last week’s leaked Supreme Court draft opinion revealing that the Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, the nearly 50 year old Supreme Court case protecting the right to abortion. We want to make clear: Abortion is still legal.

We have been preparing to launch this regular newsletter and, with last week’s news, it couldn’t be more timely. You’ll hear directly from us about what we are doing to fight for reproductive access and health care; what our health centers are doing to help patients; how you can get involved, and so much more. We will give you an inside look into PPMW’s work, news, updates, and success stories.
We hope you enjoy the PPMW Insider, and we welcome your feedback!

BE IN THE KNOW
On May 2nd, we learned the devastating news that the Supreme Court is poised to upend over 50 years of precedent and overturn Roe v. Wade . This would end the constitutional right to abortion in throughout the country, with each state in the nation having a different abortion landscape.
First, we want to address the anxiety so many of you are feeling and reaffirm that abortion is still legal and protected in our region. Our doors will remain open and we will continue to provide abortion care to our patients.

The consequences of this decision, should it come to pass, would be swift and far reaching. Overturning Roe means 26 states could swiftly move to ban abortion. We know that the burden of these restrictions will fall disproportionately on low-income and BIPOC people. In turn, PPMW may see an increase in the number of patients from other areas coming to the DMV from other areas in search of care. We’re working to expand our Equity Fund to welcome and provide financial assistance to those who come to us in need.
On May 3, Washington DC leaders including Mayor Muriel Bowser, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, members of the DC Council, and PPMW leadership came together at a press event at our 4th Street health center to reaffirm PPMW and the District’s commitment to abortion access.
We will not back down. Generations before us have fought tirelessly to gain and protect the rights we have today. We are in this fight to make sure everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Together we will continue to fight like hell to protect safe, legal, abortion in our region.
