On May 2nd, we learned the devastating news that the Supreme Court is poised to upend over 50 years of precedent and overturn Roe v. Wade. This would end the constitutional right to abortion in throughout the country, with each state in the nation having a different abortion landscape.
First, we want to address the anxiety so many of you are feeling and reaffirm that abortion is still legal and protected in our region. Our doors will remain open and we will continue to provide abortion care to our patients.
The consequences of this decision, should it come to pass, would be swift and far reaching. Overturning Roe means 26 states could swiftly move to ban abortion. We know that the burden of these restrictions will fall disproportionately on low-income and BIPOC people. We are already seeing an increase in the number of patients coming to us for abortion care from states with abortion bans. This is why we created the Abortion Access Fund to help patients access abortion, no matter what.
On May 3, Washington DC leaders including Mayor Muriel Bowser, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, members of the DC Council, and PPMW leadership came together at a press event at our 4th Street health center to reaffirm PPMW and the District’s commitment to abortion access.
We will not back down. Generations before us have fought tirelessly to gain and protect the rights we have today. We are in this fight to make sure everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Together we will continue to fight like hell to protect safe, legal, abortion in our region.
