School nurses serve a vital role in promoting the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of students and staff. NASN has a number of resources available to help school nurses talk with students and families. As we know, the pandemic has been a source of stress, anxiety, and grief for many students, staff, and families. NASN has resources on Social and Emotional Health in our COVID-19 Reference Guide. However, it's equally important that school nurses also take care of their own mental health. Mental Health America has a number of resources school nurses can use to evaluate themselves. Learn how to recognize when you may need help with mental health and what to do when you need help. Linda Mendonça, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC, NCSN, FNASN NASN President BETTER HEALTH. School nurses are often critical of their school systems and school stakeholders for not celebrating them more, for not recognizing what they bring to the table, and for sometimes forgetting them. Yet, many opportunities to honor and elevate the visibility of their fellow school nurses are squandered. The onus is on us to assure that the spotlight shines on school nurses. Paid advertisements NASN Releases New Sexual Health Toolkit NASN is excited to introduce the new Sexual Health Toolkit, produced with support from the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH). It is an easily accessible source of information for schools and school nurses interested in promoting efforts to reduce HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy, as well as reduce behaviors that contribute to health risks among our nation’s adolescents. The toolkit provides a range of resources from publications, webinars, factsheets, and program implementation guides. The materials represent a compilation of existing resources and materials selected by the CDC and NASN and vetted by an advisory group of school nurses. GET THE TOOLKIT Laboratory Testing in the School Setting: Are You CLIA Compliant? The pandemic and resulting mitigation strategy of COVID-19 testing adopted by some schools have raised questions about the need for school nurses to comply with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). School nurses should be knowledgeable about CLIA certification. In the NASN May 2022 podcast, NASN School Nurse Editor Cynthia Galemore interviews authors Vicki Moran and Margaret Bultas about the article, "Laboratory Testing in the School Setting: Are You CLIA Compliant?".
