Champions for School Health Project in the News |
The Champions for School Health project, to increase confidence in and access to pediatric COVID-19 vaccinations, was created in partnership with the Institute for Educational Leadership and with generous support from Kaiser Permanente.
In just one instance of schools receiving grant money, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Receive Grant from NASN. “ACPS is proud of our school nurses and clinic assistants,” said ACPS Director of School Health Services Dr. Jasmin Whitfield. “This grant is a testament to their dedication and integral to their holistic approach in fostering the health and well-being of all students.”

School nurses are often critical of their school systems and school stakeholders for not celebrating them more, for not recognizing what they bring to the table, and for sometimes forgetting them. Yet, many opportunities to honor and elevate the visibility of their fellow school nurses are squandered.
The onus is on us to assure that the spotlight shines on school nurses.

NASN Releases New Sexual Health Toolkit |
|
NASN is excited to introduce the new Sexual Health Toolkit, produced with support from the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH). It is an easily accessible source of information for schools and school nurses interested in promoting efforts to reduce HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy, as well as reduce behaviors that contribute to health risks among our nation’s adolescents. The toolkit provides a range of resources from publications, webinars, factsheets, and program implementation guides. The materials represent a compilation of existing resources and materials selected by the CDC and NASN and vetted by an advisory group of school nurses. |

Laboratory Testing in the School Setting: Are You CLIA Compliant? |

The pandemic and resulting mitigation strategy of COVID-19 testing adopted by some schools have raised questions about the need for school nurses to comply with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). School nurses should be knowledgeable about CLIA certification.

NASN Staff Update: Meet Kimberly Stanislo |
NASN is excited to welcome Kimberly Stanislo, DNP, APRN-CNP, LSN, CPNP-PC to our staff as NASN Research Education and Practice Director.
Dr. Stanislo received a BS in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Mount Union, post-bachelor’s nursing certificate and MSN in Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner from Case Western Reserve University, School Nurse Certificate from Wright State University, and DNP as a Clinical Expert, and Nursing Education Certificate from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Stanislo has practiced in school nursing since 2004 in various capacities from building nurse, school nurse administrator, and school nurse educator. She has served as the Data Coordinator, Education Chair, and Professional Practice Chair for the Ohio Association of School Nurses since 2016. Her professional practice, teaching, and research interests include genetics, advocacy, evidence-based practice, school nursing, social determinants of health and health disparities, childhood lead exposure, moral injury in nurses, and health informatics. Dr. Stanislo has been a strong advocate for implementing the WSCC model, addressing the social determinants of health, promoting professional school nursing practice, and supporting the health and academic outcomes of all students. Welcome to the NASN team!

|
School nurses are actively monitoring vaccine uptake for student populations. The Mayo Clinic has a resource to identify U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by state. This resource also reports U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by age. Learn more.

Know Your COVID-19 Community Level |
|
COVID-19 Community Levels is a tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly.

The CDC recommends everyone ages 5 years and older get vaccinated to help protect against COVID-19. School nurses are strongly positioned within their communities to educate students, families, and school staff about the critical role vaccines play in preventing disease, allowing students and staff to remain healthy and in school. The Endowment Fundraising Committee will once again host the popular Satchels and Purses for Nurses event at the In-Person NASN2022 conference! Each year, NASN Affiliates and NASN Past Presidents donate purses, satchels, or totes for a silent auction.
Browse items and place bids in the In-Person NASN2022 Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, June 28 from 12 - 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, June 29 from 10 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. We will notify bid winners at the conference through the conference discussion list, the mobile app, and Twitter.

Expanding Medicaid-Funded School Health Services

Given the growing concern about student health, NASN's partner Healthy Schools Campaign is releasing new and updated guidance to help schools expand Medicaid-funded school health services. It includes an interactive map and detailed information about Medicaid-eligible services and school nursing and behavioral health personnel in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

This year, the National Eye Institute wants to inspire families to team up and learn how to protect their vision together! The 2022 campaign is centered around people who are more likely to have eye problems because of barriers in access to eye care. Explore their resources to spread the word and join the conversation on eye health equity!

NASN Resources: The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness partnered with NASN to provide national guidance for school nurses and others involved in front-line vision screening. Visit NASN's Vision and Eye Health practice topic page and learn more. The VSP Eyes of Hope® gift certificate program provides school nurses with gift certificates for a no-cost eye exam and, if prescribed, new glasses that NASN members can distribute to students who qualify.
