Born Free’s major new report Elephants in Zoos: A Legacy of Shame ( [link removed] ) reveals the mammoth suffering of this much-loved species and has sent shock-waves through the industry. In Europe alone, 580 of these majestic, sentient animals are kept in zoos, including 49 in the UK.

We don’t need to tell you these far-ranging, intelligent animals belong with their loving families, on Africa’s vast, ever-changing savannahs. The zoo is no place for an elephant – many are wild-caught and often kept in restricted space, in small groups or alone. Zoo elephants can suffer health problems, high infant mortality and display unnatural, repetitive behaviours.
