The pandemic and resulting mitigation strategy of COVID-19 testing adopted by some schools have raised questions about the need for school nurses to comply with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). School nurses should be knowledgeable about CLIA certification. In the NASN May 2022 podcast, NASN School Nurse Editor Cynthia Galemore interviews authors Vicki Moran and Margaret Bultas about the article, "Laboratory Testing in the School Setting: Are You CLIA Compliant?". Article: School Nurses on the Front Lines of Health Care Don't miss this NASN School Nurse article, School Nurses on the Front Lines of Health Care: Clinical Presentations Associated With COVID-19 Infection. Given the unique position of school nurses in seeing a large volume of children and adolescents, they must be familiar with the variable presentations and complications of COVID-19. This article discusses three cases of students presenting to the school nurse’s office with signs and symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection. Paid advertisements President's Endowment Challenge The theme for the 2022 NASN President's Endowment Challenge is Transform Student Health Equity. With this fund, you will help every student get equitable access to the health care they deserve. The money raised will be used for research pertaining to student health and furthering the school nursing practice, as well as the provision of scholarships for school nurses seeking to advance their education. One of NASN's goals is to pursue health, education, and social equity for students through shared leadership. Data collection and research help determine the influence of school health services on individual social needs, social determinants, as well as health and educational disparities. No amount is too small -- $1, $10, or $100 -- every penny counts. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Toolkit: Improving Care Coordination for Students with Chronic Health Conditions Care Coordination is one of the five principles in NASN’S Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM. In April 2018, NASN convened the Strategy to Action Roundtable to identify key components of a collaborative approach to managing chronic health conditions in school-age children. The resulting white paper, Translating Strategies into Actions to Improve Care Coordination for Students with Chronic Health Conditions, ended with a call to action for meeting participants to work together in the school community. The roundtable also resulted in a call to action for NASN to develop additional tools and resources to support school nurses in leading care coordination for students with chronic health conditions. This toolkit answers that call.
