New NASN Podcast - Laboratory Testing in the School Setting:
Are You CLIA Compliant?
The pandemic and resulting mitigation strategy of COVID-19 testing adopted by some schools have raised questions about the need for school nurses to comply with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). School nurses should be knowledgeable about CLIA certification.

In the NASN May 2022 podcast, NASN School Nurse Editor Cynthia Galemore interviews authors Vicki Moran and Margaret Bultas about the article, "Laboratory Testing in the School Setting: Are You CLIA Compliant?".

President's Endowment Challenge
The theme for the 2022 NASN President's Endowment Challenge is Transform Student Health Equity. With this fund, you will help every student get equitable access to the health care they deserve. The money raised will be used for research pertaining to student health and furthering the school nursing practice, as well as the provision of scholarships for school nurses seeking to advance their education. One of NASN's goals is to pursue health, education, and social equity for students through shared leadership. Data collection and research help determine the influence of school health services on individual social needs, social determinants, as well as health and educational disparities.

No amount is too small -- $1, $10, or $100 -- every penny counts.

COVID-19 Updates
Mayo Clinic COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker
School nurses are actively monitoring vaccine uptake for student populations. The Mayo Clinic has a resource to identify U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by state. This resource also reports U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by age. Learn more.
Know Your COVID-19 Community Level
COVID-19 Community Levels is a tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly.
CDC's FAQs about COVID-19 Vaccination for Children and Teens

The CDC recommends everyone ages 5 years and older get vaccinated to help protect against COVID-19. School nurses are strongly positioned within their communities to educate students, families, and school staff about the critical role vaccines play in preventing disease, allowing students and staff to remain healthy and in school. Here you'll find answers to commonly asked questions about COVID-19 vaccination in children ages 5 years and older.
NASN2022 Key Details
NASN’s 54th Annual School Nurse Conference offers a number of important sessions and speakers. Join us for the General Session at 8:15 a.m. June 30, Seizure Training for School Nurses: Caring for Students with Sara Franklin, APR, and Dr. Kathryn Lalor from the Epilepsy Foundation (EF).

Epilepsy is the most common childhood neurologic condition in the United States, affecting roughly 470,000 children, or 6 per 1,000 school-aged children diagnosed with epilepsy.

Frequently, school nurses are charged with managing seizures within the school setting and often are faced with many challenges in addressing the unique needs of this population.

Seizure Training for School Nurses: Caring for Students is an (EF) program designed to provide the school nurse with information, strategies, and resources that will enable them to better manage the student with seizures by supporting positive treatment outcomes, maximizing educational and developmental opportunities, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
Managing Chronic Health Conditions
Toolkit: Improving Care Coordination for Students with Chronic Health Conditions
Care Coordination is one of the five principles in NASN’S Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM. In April 2018, NASN convened the Strategy to Action Roundtable to identify key components of a collaborative approach to managing chronic health conditions in school-age children. The resulting white paper, Translating Strategies into Actions to Improve Care Coordination for Students with Chronic Health Conditions, ended with a call to action for meeting participants to work together in the school community. The roundtable also resulted in a call to action for NASN to develop additional tools and resources to support school nurses in leading care coordination for students with chronic health conditions. This toolkit answers that call.
Improving School Community & Student Health
