We understand – perhaps better than most – how difficult Mother's Day can be for some people. If you'd prefer not to receive emails related to Mother's Day, click here [[link removed]] to temporarily opt out of this series (don't worry, you'll stay on our list and continue to receive updates on the rest of our important work!)

As Mother's Day approaches, we are thinking of all the people who won't be able to celebrate: the mothers who have been killed by gun violence, the children murdered in school shootings, the millions of people who will feel a sting of loss instead of love this weekend.

This is not a new issue, John: We've seen nearly two decades' worth of Mother's Days come and go without Congress passing a new assault weapons ban. Meanwhile, assault rifles have become the weapon of choice for mass shooters — and their presence on our streets is a danger to us all.

It’s no secret what’s stopped this lifesaving progress for so long: the cowardice and money-hungry opportunism of the NRA and its bought-and-paid-for politicians. They’ve dug in their fingernails to hold onto their last bit of power in Congress, but we do have a gun-violence prevention majority, supported by a gun violence prevention champion in our President. The groundwork is in place and now what we need is a groundswell of support.

Now, to actually BAN assault weapons and make this long-awaited change, we ALL need to get involved — and when we pulled your record, here's what we found. Please, update your record now:
