As Mother's Day approaches, we are thinking of all the people who won't be able to celebrate: the mothers who have been killed by gun violence, the children murdered in school shootings, the millions of people who will feel a sting of loss instead of love this weekend.
This is not a new issue, John: We've seen nearly two decades' worth of Mother's Days come and go without Congress passing a new assault weapons ban. Meanwhile, assault rifles have become the weapon of choice for mass shooters — and their presence on our streets is a danger to us all.

It’s no secret what’s stopped this lifesaving progress for so long: the cowardice and money-hungry opportunism of the NRA and its bought-and-paid-for politicians. They’ve dug in their fingernails to hold onto their last bit of power in Congress, but we do have a gun-violence prevention majority, supported by a gun violence prevention champion in our President. The groundwork is in place and now what we need is a groundswell of support.
