[Content/Trigger warning] The following email discusses topics regarding our opponents mishandling of a rape case that he was entrusted with overseeing while he was a district attorney. If these topics are triggering please take this into consideration.

John,
In light of the Supreme Court’s decision to terminate Roe v. Wade, Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO) has found himself in the headlines for his stance on women’s reproductive freedoms, particularly over the fact that he believes even victims of rape and incest should be stripped of their right to choose.

Before becoming a Congressman, from 2004 to 2014 Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO) served as the District Attorney for Weld County, one of Northern Colorado’s most populous counties seated in the city of Greeley.

In 2010, during Buck’s tenure as DA, a 21-year-old college student who had been raped by a former lover attempted to see her attacker prosecuted via the Weld County District Attorney’s office.

Seeing little progress from the DA’s office, the victim met with District Attorney Buck and recorded the conversation. Rather than abide by his sworn oath to uphold the law as a prosecutor, or just be a good human being and offer some sympathy, Buck chose to blame the victim. Here’s what he was recorded saying:

Disgusting.

In an interview with the Greeley Tribune, Buck would later go on to describe the victim’s experience as, ‘a case of buyer's remorse’.

Buck’s misogyny doesn’t stop here, when the Violence Against Women Act came up for reauthorization in 2021, Buck stated that he was “proud” to not support the “radical” Violence Against Women Act.

In a district with over 434,151 female constituents along with the least coverage for reproductive care in the entire state, Colorado’s 4th Congressional district can do better than Buck. If he thinks that over half of his constituents shouldn’t be able to make their own decision about their bodies, then he doesn’t deserve to be their Congressman.

And if Republicans take back the House in November, Congressman Buck will take a leading position on the House Judiciary Committee where he will be able to block any attempt to codify Roe. We cannot let this happen.

Do not let this dark moment deter you. Now is the time to fight and we hope you will join us.
