Alexandria joined Instagram
users last week for an Ask Me Anything session where someone asked “How
does canceling student debt help us who paid their loans?”

Here’s how she responded:

[ [link removed] ]AOC: Happy Saturday! ask me anything. Anonymous question: How does
canceling studennt debt help us who paid their loans? AOC: I’ve said it
before and I’ll say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody.
People with apartments pay for first time homeowner benefits. Young people
pay for Medicare for our seniors. People who take public transit pay for
car infrastructure. Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn’t impact you.
That doesn’t make it bad. I am sure there are certainly other things that
student loan borrowers’ taxes pay for. We can do good things and reject
the scarcity mindset that says doing something good for someone else comes
at the cost of something for ourselves. An example: If a person is blessed
enough to be in a position to have paid off their loans, maybe they have a
home now and benefitted from first time homeowners programs that people
crushed by student loans help subsidize when they aren’t able to buy a
home because of student debt. It all comes around. It’s okay. We can
support things we won’t directly benefit from.

Alexandria has made student debt a key priority – she shared her own
student debt story on the House floor, has repeatedly called on Biden to
use this executive order to cancel student debt, and co-sponsored the
resolution with Sen. Warren and other colleagues to cancel up to $50,000
in federal student loan debt for borrowers.^1

Last year, we asked you to share your stories of how student loan debt
impacts you and your families. The stories we received were heartbreaking
reminders of the cruel and painful burden of student
loans.

We have seen the benefits that student loan cancellation can have since
the emergency COVID-19 forbearance went into effect two years ago. The
forbearance has given people the breathing room to take care of their
families and to start investing in their futures.

No person should have to go into lifelong debt in order to get an
education. It’s wrong. It’s backwards. And, it doesn’t help us as a
country.

Our movement will not stop fighting for student debt cancellation.
