Alexandria joined Instagram users last week for an Ask Me Anything session where someone asked “How does canceling student debt help us who paid their loans?”

Alexandria has made student debt a key priority – she shared her own student debt story on the House floor, has repeatedly called on Biden to use this executive order to cancel student debt, and co-sponsored the resolution with Sen. Warren and other colleagues to cancel up to $50,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers.1
Last year, we asked you to share your stories of how student loan debt impacts you and your families. The stories we received were heartbreaking reminders of the cruel and painful burden of student loans.
We have seen the benefits that student loan cancellation can have since the emergency COVID-19 forbearance went into effect two years ago. The forbearance has given people the breathing room to take care of their families and to start investing in their futures.
No person should have to go into lifelong debt in order to get an education. It’s wrong. It’s backwards. And, it doesn’t help us as a country.
