POPULATION MATTERS SUPPORTERS' UPDATE
APRIL 2022
Dear John,
Two sobering recent reports, one on unintended pregnancies (see Women's
Rights & Sexual Health section) and one on climate change mitigation from
the UN's climate change science body, the IPCC, show that the world is not
making enough progress on either of these issues. This article [3] by Phil
Cafaro for The Overpopulation Project does a great job of pointing out
politicians' and the media's failure to acknowledge the critical population
factor in the IPCC report.
At Population Matters we always emphasise the interconnectedness of our
planetary crises and call for greater investment in human rights-centred
solutions that improve lives and protect our environment. With worsening
humanitarian crises, biodiversity loss and climate impacts, it is more
important than ever before to advance holistic, effective solutions.
If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you check out our new interactive
Population Explorer [4] (see News from PM) which we hope will inspire more
people to find out about both the facts and the win-win solutions that PM
promotes.
Finally, this will be the last Update that is signed off by me, as after
almost four amazing years at PM, I am moving on to new challenges. Whilst I
am sad about leaving, the good news is that someone else will get a chance
at this wonderful job - see below for more information!
My best wishes,
Olivia Nater

POPULATION & ENVIRONMENT
Four ways in which human and environmental health are linked
The way we are treating the planet is not just bad for the environment –
we are actively undermining our own health and well-being too. This
year’s World Health Day (7 April) drew attention to this crucial fact
with the theme ‘Our Planet, Our Health’. In this blog we explore four
critical planetary health issues.

Tackling population growth in Nigeria
Nigeria has the largest population in Africa and is one of the fastest
growing countries in the world, expected to become the third most populous
by mid-century. This rapid growth, driven by a high fertility rate, is
placing unprecedented strain on the natural environment as well as on
already fragile social services and infrastructure. We spoke to Chidera
Benoit, head of the Population Explosion Awareness Initiative (PEAI), a
non-profit organisation dedicated to slowing population growth in Nigeria
through empowering solutions.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS & SEXUAL HEALTH
The elephant in the womb: Unintended pregnancies
This year’s UN State of the World Population report focuses on the
worrying issue of unintended pregnancies. Still approximately half of all
pregnancies today are unplanned and the number of affected women is
increasing. Tackling this crisis is key to achieving a better future and
should be an utmost priority.

"I was refused for years": The women struggling to access sterilisation
A few weeks ago, we shared a Buzzfeed article on our Facebook page about a
woman celebrating her long-awaited sterilisation. The article resonated
with a lot of our followers, mostly women, who have faced similar struggles
when trying to access permanent contraception. Read about their
experiences.

Quote of the month
_"There is a really compelling argument that we need to manage population
growth in order to have less of an impact on the earth, less of a need for
food, a need for material resources. I don't think this is the kind of
conversation we should shy away from having because it will make a big
difference whether we have ten billion people or 12 billion people on the
planet in a century's time. But actually, interestingly it's all about
women's empowerment."_
