Dear John,
Two sobering recent reports, one on unintended pregnancies (see Women's Rights & Sexual Health section) and one on climate change mitigation from the UN's climate change science body, the IPCC, show that the world is not making enough progress on either of these issues. This article by Phil Cafaro for The Overpopulation
Project does a great job of pointing out politicians' and the media's failure to acknowledge the critical population factor in the IPCC report.
At Population Matters we always emphasise the interconnectedness of our planetary crises and call for greater investment in human rights-centred solutions that improve lives and protect our environment. With worsening humanitarian crises, biodiversity loss and climate impacts, it is more important than ever before to advance holistic, effective solutions. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you check out our new interactive Population Explorer (see News from PM) which we hope will inspire more people to find out about both the facts and the win-win solutions that PM promotes.
Finally, this will be the last Update that is signed off by me, as after almost four amazing years at PM, I am moving on to new challenges. Whilst I am sad about leaving, the good news is that someone else will get a chance at this wonderful job - see below for more information!
My best wishes,
