Our latest In Focus series [2]centers on our changing climate and
highlights the work of programs across the Institute. We approach the issue
from many lenses: from its influence on child mental health to its impact
on worker safety, the future of our planet affects every aspect of human
endeavor.

The Institute’s research, ideas, and program initiatives on climate change
also will be center stage at the inaugural [3]Aspen Ideas: Climate,
beginning May 9. [4]Join us.

[6]The Case for a Civilian Climate Corps

Shifting away from a carbon-based economy requires creating millions of
new, clean jobs. Fortunately, there is a [7]blueprint for this. During the
Great Depression, a New Deal program called the Civilian Conservation Corps
hired young people to plant trees, build and improve parks, construct
bridges and roads, and much more. The [8]Forum for Community Solutions
looks at how this 90-year-old model could be modernized for our green
future.

[11]How to Activate Schools for Climate Action

America’s more than 100,000 schools serve over 50 million students, making
them the largest consumers of energy in the public sector. They are also an
underutilized climate solution-in-waiting. The [12]K12 Climate Action team
is helping create a future in which students are prepared to succeed in the
green economy and where schools [13]become models for decarbonization.
It’s time for policymakers, school leaders, educators, students, parents,
and caretakers to play their part.

[16]Holy Ground: Faith and the Natural World

Nature plays a large role [17]in many faith traditions, from the creation
story of the Garden of Eden to the holy water of the Ganges River. The
[18]Religion & Society Program collected reflections from people of faith,
illuminating the significance of the environment in the beliefs and
practices of Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, and Bahá’í traditions.

[21]Centering Children in Our Climate Solutions

The effects of climate change will fall longest — and therefore hardest
— on children. They [22]will feel its lasting impacts on their health,
development, and ability to flourish. Hundreds of millions of children are
already exposed to heatwaves, water scarcity, and high levels of air
pollution. 2021 [23]Ascend Fellow Joe Waters explains the need for
policymakers to make climate change a “children’s issue” and advises
parents on how to help their kids navigate the crisis.

In the News

As part of his effort to counter disinformation and threats to democracy in
the digital age, President Barack Obama named Aspen Digital’s
[30]Commission on Information Disorder report at the top of his
[31]Disinformation and Democracy Reading List. Offering a viable framework
for action, the report makes 15 recommendations for how government, private
industry, and civil society can help to increase transparency and
understanding, build trust, and reduce harms.
