Our latest In Focus series centers on our changing climate and highlights the work of programs across the Institute. We approach the issue from many lenses: from its influence on child mental health to its impact on worker safety, the future of our planet affects every aspect of human endeavor.

The Institute’s research, ideas, and program initiatives on climate change also will be center stage at the inaugural Aspen Ideas: Climate, beginning May 9. Join us.

Shifting away from a carbon-based economy requires creating millions of new, clean jobs. Fortunately, there is a blueprint for this. During the Great Depression, a New Deal program called the Civilian Conservation Corps hired young people to plant trees, build and improve parks, construct bridges and roads, and much more. The Forum for Community Solutions looks at how this 90-year-old model could be modernized for our green future.

It’s time for policymakers, school leaders, educators, students, parents, and caretakers to play their part.

Hundreds of millions of children are already exposed to heatwaves, water scarcity, and high levels of air pollution. 2021 Ascend Fellow Joe Waters explains the need for policymakers to make climate change a “children’s issue” and advises parents on how to help their kids navigate the crisis.
