☀️ GND 4 DC: IT'S HAPPENING!!! ☀️

Hey John,

We are incredibly excited to announce that yesterday morning, our favorite GND champion, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George introduced the Green New Deal for Housing!

The bill calls for the creation of government-owned social housing that will be both deeply affordable and sustainable. Buildings in this program will make net-zero energy purchases, use no fossil fuels, and generate energy with renewable power on-site to cut down on emissions within the home, with rent capped for very low-income households.

These developments will also be governed by their tenants -- tenants within these units will be able to elect leadership, hire and fire management companies, and manage a community budget . Additionally, this bill creates a new Office of Social Housing Development, which will include a council of at least five renters, and a director consented to by the DC Council, giving power back to the people and encouraging tenant engagement!

Legislation like this is exciting for a number of reasons -- but most importantly, it creates a real possibility of changing the lives of DC residents, particularly renters. It brings us one significant step closer to victory in our fight against the climate crisis. By having provisions around sustainability for new and existing housing in this bill, we're ensuring better health outcomes for residents.

We wouldn't have found our way here without countless hours of direct action, community engagement, public testimony, and electoral work. Organizing works , and we should be proud to be engaged in these struggles to not only mitigate the harms being delivered environmentally, but also uplift our neighbors and support our communities!

While we were pleased to see Councilmember Lewis George was joined by four other councilmembers to sponsor the bill, we've still got some way to go. This bill is one step closer to a livable future on the long journey to combat the climate crisis, and we are ready to fight to get it passed. But we need YOU to make this happen.

Find your councilmember's phone number below and ask them if they'll be supporting the Green New Deal for Housing Amendment Act of 2022. We must demand the future we deserve!
