One year ago, Robert Sebatware, a refugee from Democratic Republic of Congo, had his dream come true. He worked hard and saved and was able to buy his first home.
“I never thought I could do this in America... I just love being with my family in a safe and comforting place.”
This would not have been possible without people like you. With your support, the IRC helped Robert and his wife Esther build their credit and trained them on how to buy a house. Our team in Phoenix taught them English and helped Robert find his first job.

Life for Robert wasn’t easy for a very long time. He fled war in DRC when he was just four years old, living in a refugee camp in Uganda for 20 years.
His memory of the war starting is vivid. “The bullets were coming so close to me. Then I started crying and crying. I said, ‘Mom,’ but my mom was not around. Then my auntie, we lived close by, started calling. She was like, ‘Hey, my son, come.’ And I said, ‘What’s going on?’ She said, ‘Come faster, come faster, come—run.”’
From that day forward Robert, like so many refugees, lived a life in limbo. He didn’t want to leave his home, but had no choice.
As you prepare for Thanksgiving with your loved ones, we hope you will help us support more refugees like Robert. They need you, [Name], to help them survive crises like what Robert experienced in the DRC, recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. Make a gift now and your donation will be matched.
