Actions to finish Earth Month strong.
*********************
Dear Friend,
With Earth Month 2022 wrapping up, it’s a good time to think about what we can all do moving forward to protect species biodiversity. The stakes are high — between one third and one half of all species could be at risk of extinction by 2100 — so we need to stay engaged. The good news is that most of the actions we send your way are already in defense of biodiversity. The good news is that most of the actions we send your way are already in defense of biodiversity.
How’s that? Biodiversity loss is driven in large part by entrenched interests that want to maintain an economic system that sacrifices the Earth’s people and wildlife for profit. Mining, logging, oil and gas extraction, and overfishing are how ecosystems and communities experience this on the ground — and we are always going to need to fight these symptoms directly. While doing that, we must maintain focus on the root causes in order to stop the harm entirely. We can do this together by advocating for Indigenous sovereignty, reining in industries that profit from destruction, and forging new systems that respect our interdependent relationship with all life on Earth.
This is no small task, but the thing that continues to give me hope is the relentless activism of Earthjustice action-takers — activism that continues to get results. Our exploitative economic system is good at perpetuating itself, but there are countless people, just like you, who know that a better world is possible. We can do this if we work together — and that starts with you using your voice today to protect the life we share this planet with.

Restore the Endangered Species Act
In the waning days of the Trump administration, the Endangered Species Act was under attack — the administration made up its own definition of “habitat,” and put in place a new process that made it easier for industry to destroy essential wildlife habitat. Earthjustice filed lawsuit after lawsuit to stop Trump from gutting the law, and tens of thousands of Earthjustice supporters rose to the occasion and pushed back during multiple public comment periods. Together we held the line. Now we need your help to encourage the Biden administration to move as quickly as possible to restore the Endangered Species Act.

Protect our public lands and waters from fossil fuels
The federal government leases vast swathes of public lands and waters to private corporations to drill for oil and gas and to mine for coal. As a result, nearly 25% of climate-cooking emissions from the United States come from fossil fuels pumped or mined from lands and waters that belong to the public. It doesn’t have to be this way. The federal oil, gas, and coal leasing program is broken, and reforming it is crucial to meaningfully address climate change – help us make it happen.

Restore protections for Northern Rockies wolves
The gray wolf species in the Northern Rockies has faced its most severe threat in a century. While an Earthjustice lawsuit recently restored protections for wolves in 44 states, due to a series of administrative and legislative maneuvers over the past decade, wolves remain unprotected in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and portions of several adjacent states. We are calling for federal Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies.

Demand a National Biodiversity Strategy
In 2021, the U.S. government declared 23 more species extinct, and in the coming decades, thousands more species could disappear forever due to climate change and habitat loss. This extinction crisis means fewer pollinators for agriculture, depleted fisheries, and disappearing places like old growth forests that provide a long-term, low-cost source of clean air and water. Urge the Biden administration to establish a National Biodiversity Strategy to comprehensively address this crisis.
