Dear Friend, |
With Earth Month 2022 wrapping up, it’s a good time to think about what we can all do moving forward to protect species biodiversity. The stakes are high — between one third and one half of all species could be at risk of extinction by 2100 — so we need to stay engaged. The good news is that most of the actions we send your way are already in defense of biodiversity. |
How’s that? Biodiversity loss is driven in large part by entrenched interests that want to maintain an economic system that sacrifices the Earth’s people and wildlife for profit. Mining, logging, oil and gas extraction, and overfishing are how ecosystems and communities experience this on the ground — and we are always going to need to fight these symptoms directly. While doing that, we must maintain focus on the root causes in order to stop the harm entirely. We can do this together by advocating for Indigenous sovereignty, reining in industries that profit from destruction, and forging new systems that respect our interdependent relationship with all life on Earth. |
This is no small task, but the thing that continues to give me hope is the relentless activism of Earthjustice action-takers — activism that continues to get results. Our exploitative economic system is good at perpetuating itself, but there are countless people, just like you, who know that a better world is possible. We can do this if we work together — and that starts with you using your voice today to protect the life we share this planet with. |
