Dear John,

Thank you to the thousands of people in the AFSC community who have recently messages to Congress! We have two major Congressional efforts underway – and if you haven’t helped yet, today is a great day to act. With some trying to roll back recent progress to make immigration more humane, it’s important to voice support for restoring the right to seek asylum [link removed] at the U.S.-Mexico border.

And $813,000,000,000 is currently proposed for military spending in the next year’s federal budget. But it’s not too late for Congress to move some of that money into funding community needs [link removed] .

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

How we are helping children in Gaza get ready for school: [link removed] In Gaza, many families are unable to purchase the supplies children need for school. Learn more about how AFSC is responding, and how you can help.

Biden grant of 18-month deportation reprieve for Cameroonian nationals in the U.S. gets local applause: [link removed] “We hope that the administration continues to take these momentous steps to help dismantle the anti-Black sentiment within the immigration system,” says AFSC’s Serges Demefack. (Gothamist)

Over a year later and Biden still has not restored access to asylum: [link removed] AFSC’s Imani Cruz shares an update and analysis on U.S. immigration policies. Today, there are still thousands of people in immigration detention and the border is closed to most asylum seekers. Find out more in this update.

Why our response to climate change must be grounded in climate justice: [link removed] The environmental consequences of climate change are evident, writes AFSC’s Peniel Ibe. So too, are the social effects. Learn more about how equity and justice should be at the heart of climate action.

Take action to abolish the death penalty: [link removed] Death sentences do not deter crime. They are also disproportionately handed to people of color. Yet, an execution was carried out in Texas this week, and two more are planned in Texas and South Carolina this month. Please join us in condemning these acts of violence. It’s time to abolish the death penalty once and for all.
