Physician Burnout And Care Quality

In an article published in this month's issue of Health Affairs,
Lawrence Casalino and coauthors conducted an analysis of the
relationship between physician burnout and quality and cost of medical
care
.

The authors linked survey data from family physicians to Medicare claims
and found no consistent relationship between burnout or callousness and
outcomes for patients, in general or for dual-eligible patients.

"It is possible that burnout of physicians to some extent is
associated with concern for patients, and therefore better outcomes,"
they note.

For more about physician burnout, revisit an article by Samuel Edwards
and coauthors about the cultural and structural features of zero-burnout
primary care practices
.
