Learning: NCPD CNE info NASN’s 54th Annual School Nurse Conference offers a number of important sessions and speakers. This week's spotlight on speakers highlights the General Session at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, which will be on The Hidden Epidemic of Sleep Disorders in Children. In this session, neurologist and sleep specialist William C. Winter will educate school nurses about sleep disorders in children. These disorders can affect children of all ages and grade levels and may be extremely difficult to diagnose. In fact, many disorders are incorrectly diagnosed and treated by the medical establishment. The consequence of these disorders on the health, learning and wellness of students is incalculable. School nurses will learn how to recognize these disorders and refer students and families for medical follow-up. Conditions ranging from signs of inadequate sleep, breathing disturbances, and disorders of hypersomnia will be addressed. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Managing Mild Persistent Asthma in Children and Teens Asthma is a common chronic illness among children in the U.S., with a disproportionate impact among racial and ethnic minorities. A study from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute adds to evidence that symptom-based adjustment of medication works as well as provider-based adjustment for treating children and teens with mild persistent asthma. For symptom treatment, the guidelines currently recommend daily use of a fixed-dose inhaled corticosteroid supplemented (ICS) with the quick-relief use of a short-acting beta-agonist (such as albuterol). However, daily asthma control medications are often under-prescribed and underused. Studies have found the use of daily ICS to be low among African-American children, who carry a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality from asthma. There is helpful information about Evidence Updates: Choosing the Best Option for Managing Mild Persistent Asthma in Children for your parent community here. More information and resources can be found here specific to school nurses and other clinicians. New CDC MMWR: Youth Behavioral Health The CDC developed a one-time, online Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES), conducted from January 2021 to June 2021, to assess high school student behaviors and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The behaviors and experiences included unintentional injury, violence, tobacco product use, sexual behaviors, and dietary behaviors. This report of the ABES MMWR Supplement describes the ABES methodology, including the student questionnaire and administration, sampling, data collection, weighting, and analysis.
