Supporting the Health and Well-Being of School Nurses
April is Stress Awareness Month. Stress affects all systems of the body. Our bodies are equipped to handle stress in small amounts. When stress becomes chronic, it can have serious effects. NASN continues to be interested in reaching out every other month to the Healthy School Nurse community with suggested strategies to support the energy and resiliency of school nurses. Check out this month's latest blog, Journaling – Putting Pen on Paper, a simple yet powerful tool that promotes wellness. Sight for Students® is Now the VSP Eyes of Hope®
The name may have changed, but the heart of this program remains the same. NASN is grateful to VSP Vision™ for VSP Eyes of Hope® (formerly Sight for Students). The program provides school nurses with gift certificates for a no-cost eye exam and, if prescribed, new glasses that NASN members can distribute to students who qualify. Know Your COVID-19 Community Level
COVID-19 Community Levels is a new tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly.

NASN’s 54th Annual School Nurse Conference offers a number of important sessions and speakers. This week's spotlight on speakers highlights the General Session at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, which will be on The Hidden Epidemic of Sleep Disorders in Children.
In this session, neurologist and sleep specialist William C. Winter will educate school nurses about sleep disorders in children. These disorders can affect children of all ages and grade levels and may be extremely difficult to diagnose. In fact, many disorders are incorrectly diagnosed and treated by the medical establishment. The consequence of these disorders on the health, learning and wellness of students is incalculable. School nurses will learn how to recognize these disorders and refer students and families for medical follow-up. Conditions ranging from signs of inadequate sleep, breathing disturbances, and disorders of hypersomnia will be addressed.

Managing Mild Persistent Asthma in Children and Teens
Asthma is a common chronic illness among children in the U.S., with a disproportionate impact among racial and ethnic minorities. A study from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute adds to evidence that symptom-based adjustment of medication works as well as provider-based adjustment for treating children and teens with mild persistent asthma. For symptom treatment, the guidelines currently recommend daily use of a fixed-dose inhaled corticosteroid supplemented (ICS) with the quick-relief use of a short-acting beta-agonist (such as albuterol). However, daily asthma control medications are often under-prescribed and underused. Studies have found the use of daily ICS to be low among African-American children, who carry a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality from asthma. There is helpful information about Evidence Updates: Choosing the Best Option for Managing Mild Persistent Asthma in Children for your parent community here. More information and resources can be found here specific to school nurses and other clinicians.
