[ NRDC ]NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council)
— From the desk of Mitch Bernard, NRDC Chief Counsel —
Dear NRDC Activist,
There is one year left in Donald Trump's term — and his administration is
viciously stepping up its attacks on our clean air and water, wildlife,
public lands, and climate. They are attempting to dismantle as many
environmental safeguards as possible ... while they still have the chance.
The good news? With your help, NRDC is escalating a nonstop campaign of
courtroom action that is beating back the Trump onslaught.
Backed by dedicated supporters like you, NRDC attorneys have filed 96
lawsuits against the administration, and we're getting results: we've won
56 of the 61 cases that have been resolved thus far — an amazing 92%
victory rate.
I'm excited to share this update on some of our recent groundbreaking
legal wins — and ongoing battles — made possible by your commitment to
protecting our environment:
COURT VICTORIES
WIN! A federal court stood with NRDC and blocked the Trump
administration from letting oil and coal companies avoid paying millions
of dollars in royalties for mining and drilling on our public lands.

WIN! Thanks to our lawsuit, the Trump administration was forced to
concede that giraffes may warrant protection under the Endangered
Species Act, a critical step toward restricting the import of giraffe
hunting trophies and skins into the U.S., which is driving giraffes
toward extinction. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
WIN! Facing legal pressure, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to
make a critical habitat determination for the imperiled rusty patched
bumblebee by next summer and must finalize protections by Summer 2021.
If they don't propose to protect the bee's habitat, NRDC will sue them
again in court. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
ACTIVE COURT BATTLES
ACTIVE: NRDC is fighting in federal court to reverse Trump's orders to
shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments in
Utah by 2 million acres — an unprecedented land grab that could end in
massive energy development and devastation. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
ACTIVE: Just last month, we filed suit challenging the Trump
administration's withdrawal of proposed protections that would have
stopped the disastrous Pebble Mine project — a massive open-pit copper
and gold mine proposed at the pristine headwaters of Alaska's Bristol
Bay, home to the world's greatest wild salmon runs. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
ACTIVE: When Trump recently gutted the Endangered Species Act, our
nation's bedrock law for saving wildlife on the brink of extinction, we
filed suit within days to stop this illegal attack that will place
imperiled species in immediate danger. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
It's
an impressive list ... but you and I both know that Trump's attacks on the
environment will only grow more intense over the coming 12 months.
In fact, we're ready to launch a new courtroom fight to block the
administration if, as expected, it illegally opens the coastal plain of
the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling as
soon as this year. [ [link removed] ]Read More >>
If our government won't do its job to preserve and protect our
environment, it's up to us to hold their feet to the fire. That's why
we'll always keep fighting — in the courts, in communities like yours and
mine, in state houses and city halls, and in Washington. With supporters
like you in our corner, I know we will win.
On behalf of all of us at NRDC, I want to thank you for sticking with us
through some of the toughest days we've faced in our 50 years as an
organization.
I cannot overstate that all the legal expertise in the world could not
lead us to victory on so many fronts without the strong support of people
like you.
You're a critical part of our success — thanks for standing with us. I'll
keep you updated with news of our victories and court cases in the months
to come.
Sincerely,
[1]Mitch

P.S. The next 12 months will determine what kind of environment we have
left at the end of Trump's term. If you want to help fund our battles
ahead, I strongly encourage you to [ [link removed] ]make a special tax-deductible gift
here — or even better, join NRDC as a Monthly Partner today, and we'll
match your first three gifts, up to $100,000.
The mission of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is to
safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals, and the natural
systems on which all life depends.
