Weeks ago, families of Sandy Hook victims settled a lawsuit against the gun manufacturer, Remington, that made the AR-15-style rifle used to kill 26 adults and children in 2012. Remington settled with the families for $73 million, but no amount of money will bring back the loved ones they lost.

This landmark victory is the latest in a series of legal victories that are holding gun manufacturers accountable regardless of the unjust protections of PLCAA – the deadly law that protects members of the firearm industry from being held liable for crimes committed with their products. Victories like this one are possible because of the work Brady Legal has done for decades.

Over the past 30 years, Brady Legal has represented victims and survivors of gun violence, arguing in precedent-setting cases that have acted as stepping stones to the Sandy Hook settlement. Brady brought the first legal cases successfully arguing that assault weapons manufacturers should be held liable for the marketing and design of a gun used in a mass shooting, and arguing that gun manufacturers violated state unfair business practices law. Then, Brady won the first settlement with a manufacturer for a gun used in a criminal shooting, and the first appellate decision that held PLCAA allows for manufacturers to be held liable for violations of the law.

The Sandy Hook plaintiffs relied on these arguments to avoid the dismissal of their case.

Turning pain into progress, Jim refused to let this tragedy define his life. Along with his loving wife, Sarah, Jim led the fight to pass the bipartisan Brady Bill, establishing the Brady Background Check System — our nation's first background check system for gun sales.

Brady Illinois Takes Action Against “Ghost Guns”
In recent years, homemade, untraceable “ghost guns” have proliferated throughout Illinois and cities like Chicago, contributing to the alarming rate of trafficked firearms into Black and Brown communities. Prohibited purchasers — like gun traffickers — purchase and spread ghost guns because they’re extremely easy to access: a Brady Background Check is NOT required to buy one.

This week, Brady Combating Crime Guns Manager Anneliese Dickman joined Illinois Assembly Member Kambium Buckner and advocates to introduce landmark legislation to combat the spread of ghost guns. If passed and signed into law, Illinois would effectively ban the parts and kits used to assemble these deadly weapons. We thank Assembly Member Buckner for his bold leadership on ghost guns, and we call on the entire Illinois General Assembly to pass this bill without delay!

We were joined by our fantastic state and local partners, including Women Against Gun Violence, United Playaz, Youth ALIVE!, Mothers in Charge, Healing 4 Our Families & Our Nation, and San Diegans For Gun Violence Prevention.
