Outsized Drug Costs Cancel Medicare’s Progress Elsewhere
Increases in what Medicare beneficiaries spend out of pocket on prescription drugs have negated the declines achieved in out-of-pocket spending on hospital and skilled nursing home care, according to a Commonwealth Fund analysis. The new report, by Cathy Schoen, Amber Willink, and Karen Davis, also finds that, by 2016, average out-of-pocket costs for medications had exceeded what beneficiaries spent on doctors and hospitals.
