Risks of Health Plans That Don’t Comply with ACA

Millions of Americans have purchased health plans that don’t comply with the consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In their latest To the Point post, the Commonwealth Fund’s Shanoor Seervai, Munira Gunja, and Sara Collins caution that while these plans may be cheaper, they can leave people exposed to hidden costs and limited coverage — something to keep in mind when shopping for a health plan during the open enrollment period.

Retail prescription drug spending in the United States grew an average of 3.6 percent a year between 2008 and 2017. But in France, spending fell nearly 2 percent between 2008 and 2018. In a new Commonwealth Fund issue brief, Marc Rodwin examines the French government’s two-pronged strategy for limiting pharmaceutical spending without blocking access to innovative medicines.

Outsized Drug Costs Cancel Medicare’s Progress Elsewhere

Increases in what Medicare beneficiaries spend out of pocket on prescription drugs have negated the declines achieved in out-of-pocket spending on hospital and skilled nursing home care, according to a Commonwealth Fund analysis. The new report, by Cathy Schoen, Amber Willink, and Karen Davis, also finds that, by 2016, average out-of-pocket costs for medications had exceeded what beneficiaries spent on doctors and hospitals.
