Earlier this week, following the conclusion of our 2022 Literary Awards Ceremony, PEN America’s friends, supporters, and staff gathered across the street from New York City’s historic Town Hall to hold a candlelight vigil under the banner of Writers and Artists for a free Ukraine. We were joined by artist, composer, and musician Laurie Anderson and acclaimed authors Jennifer Egan, Gary Shteyngart, and Ann Patchett, who read from the works of Ukrainian thinkers and poets.

Over the last five years we have worked in close partnership with PEN Ukraine, helping build it into a forceful and flourishing organization. Today, those efforts and Ukraine’s hard-won democratic and human rights gains risk obliteration as a result of Russia’s reckless and deadly assault. ([link removed])
