PEN America Writers Resist Vigil for Ukraine
Friend —

Earlier this week, following the conclusion of our 2022 Literary Awards Ceremony, PEN America’s friends, supporters, and staff gathered across the street from New York City’s historic Town Hall to hold a candlelight vigil under the banner of Writers and Artists for a free Ukraine. We were joined by artist, composer, and musician Laurie Anderson and acclaimed authors Jennifer Egan, Gary Shteyngart, and Ann Patchett, who read from the works of Ukrainian thinkers and poets.

Over the last five years we have worked in close partnership with PEN Ukraine, helping build it into a forceful and flourishing organization. Today, those efforts and Ukraine’s hard-won democratic and human rights gains risk obliteration as a result of Russia’s reckless and deadly assault.

HELP US DEFEND THE FREEDOM TO WRITE IN UKRAINE

PEN America’s core mission is to uphold the freedom to write. Together, with your help, we can help protect Ukraine’s imperiled writers and artists, defend those who have spoken out for truth, and amplify their voices on the world stage. Your contribution to PEN America helps us continue standing with writers, intellectuals, artists, and journalists whose rights, freedom and safety are profoundly imperiled.

Thank you,
